Corner Market

Originally the town’s post office, this rural general store had been casually added-on throughout the years. Existing board and batten façade hides much of the incongruous additions of the past. The owner wanted to expand the store, add a Laundromat and increase street presence, while maintaining affordability.

The new expansion extended the rough-sawn pine cladding, a nod to the town’s logging history. Groupings of deep western-facing overhangs, windows, and panels punctuate the new façade. Painted trims and corrugated metal introduce modern detailing using affordable materials. Similar elements are applied to the existing façade to bring unity and emphasize the store’s main entrance.

For the design of the cashier and interior counters, computer modeling was used in a charrette with the client to help visualize the most ideal configuration. Exposed plywood, sheet metal, and laminate countertops were chosen as durable yet affordable materials that echoes the look of the new facade.
