Lake House
This second home for a family of four in Michigan is sited on a long but narrow lot stretching from the street to the lake. The program calls for a design of a main house at the lakeside and a boathouse with a guest quarter at the street side. To create a strong entry sequence to the main house from the street, front porches are introduced to both buildings and connected by a pergola. Meanwhile, the space between the two buildings provides an enclosed private yard for the family from the street and open lakefront.
Within the modest footprint of the main house, large interior openings allow the spaces to spill into one another. These spaces are visually expanded to the outside through a series of fenestrations facing the water. The understated white painted paneling envelop and further unify the entire main floor and is echoed in the detailing of parts.
Oak trees from the site were harvested and used as flooring and trim materials. Fiber cement siding was selected as a durable yet sustainable exterior finish.
Rina was designer & manager for this house while working for the firm Hamilton Snowber Architects.
