Newark Residence

Built in 1894, this Victorian home is the second oldest structure in the Washington D.C.’s prominent neighborhood of Cleveland Park. The design went through extensive historical and neighborhood reviews. With the strict requirement for all but the rear of the existing fabrics to remain, the original house was at one point propped by a large steel beam to allow work to progress.

Although the renovation included gutting out the existing, the bones of the original house remained and were revived to their original use. The addition introduced an open family room and kitchen oriented toward the backyard. As new work lengthened the house, a new staircase was added between the old and new. This new belly becomes the hyphen between the public front and the private rear of the house. The old, the new, and the hyphen are all reflected on the massing and detailing of the exterior.

Rina was designer & manager for this house while working for the firm Hamilton Snowber Architects.
